Keeping Your Dog Calm on Long Caravan Trips
Caravanning around Australia is the ultimate adventure, wide open roads, endless new sights, and plenty of time with your best mate. But while we humans love the journey, long trips can sometimes leave our dogs restless, anxious, or downright grumpy.
The good news? With a little preparation and a few clever tricks, you can help your pup stay calm, safe, and happy on the road.
1. Safety First = Peace of Mind
Dogs feel calmer when they’re secure. Always use a pet seat belt or travel harness to keep your dog safe while driving. Not only does it prevent accidents, it helps your pup settle down instead of bouncing around the caravan or car.
2. Create a Familiar Space
Bring along your dog’s favourite blanket, toy, or bed so they have something that smells like home. Familiar scents are super soothing for anxious travellers.
3. Plan Regular Breaks
Every 2–3 hours, stop for a toilet break, stretch, and drink of water. It’s great for humans too, but essential for pets who can’t exactly tell you when they need a pit stop!
4. Beat the Bugs & Heat
Nothing makes a dog crankier than buzzing flies or stifling heat. A Buzzibeanz Fly Veil keeps flies off their face and ears, while shade, fresh air, and cool drinking water help them stay comfortable.
5. Calm with Routine & Distraction
Stick to regular feeding and walking times where possible. For nervous dogs, soft background music, chew toys, or puzzle feeders can work wonders in keeping them relaxed during long stretches on the road.
6. Know When to Rest
Just like humans, dogs get travel fatigue. Build in some “down time” at each stop so they can nap, sniff around, and recharge before the next leg of the journey.
The Happy Traveller’s Checklist
Before your next trip, pack these essentials to keep tails wagging:
✔ Microfibre robe for wet or sandy pups
✔ Food, water, toys, and comfort items
💡 Buzzibeanz Tip: Long trips don’t have to be ruff! With the right prep (and a little Aussie-made Buzzibeanz gear), your pup will enjoy every km as much as you do.
